In 1953, AJRS was established as a single-employer defined benefit pension plan for Arkansas circuit judges, court of appeals judges, and Arkansas Supreme Court justices. Act 399 of 1999 created a Tier Two benefit plan for all persons who become members of the system after August 1, 1999. Any Active member on the system prior to August 1, 1999, had until the end of the term in office in which the member was serving on the effective date to elect coverage under Tier Two.
Act 744 of 2009 permits Tier One judges with at least 20 years of judicial service to continue making 6% employee contributions in exchange for a 2.5% increase in benefits for each additional year of service. The maximum benefit payable is 75% of the final salary.
